Not everything that a person wishes for, does he attain
The winds only blow in ways that ships do not desire

“How can a heart be illumined when the forms of created things are imprinted in its mirror? Or how can it travel to God when it is tied down by its vain desires? Or how can it be avid to enter the Divine Presence when it hasn’t purified itself from the impurity of its heedlessness? Or how can it hope to understand subtle secrets when it hasn’t repented from its errors?”
- Ibn Atallah al Iskandari

Deeds without sincerity are like a traveler who carries in his water-jug dirt. The carrying of it burdens him and it brings no benefit.

How can the public gaze be of any importance when the gaze of Allah
is upon you? Leave aside the way of the public and try to see that of God.
Ibn Ata’Allah al-Iskandari
