I learned evil….

“I learned evil not to indulge in it,
rather to abstain from it,
and whoever does not know what evil is,
it is likely that he will fall into it.”

‘Eventhough you are not equipped,
keep searching:
equipment isn’t necessary on the way to the Lord.
Whoever you see engaged in search,
become her friend and cast your head in front of her,
for choosing to be a neighbour of seekers,
you become one yourself;
protected by conquerors,
you will yourself learn to conquer.
If an ant seeks the rank of Solomon,
don’t smile contemptuously upon its quest.
And of all your skills, and wealth and handicraft,
Weren’t they first merely a thought and a quest?’
– Rumi ( Mathnawi )

The foolish one speaks to me with all ugliness
And I hate to respond to him

He increases in his foolishness while I increase in my forbearance
Like the ‘oud which intensifies its sweet scent the more it is burnt

Abu al-Aswad al-Du’ali, the grammarian who said:

و أحبب إذا ما أحببت حبّاً مقارباً *** فإنك لا تدري: متى أنت نازع
When you love, love with a love that draws you close
For you do not know: when will you depart?

And when you hate, hate without turning away
For you do not know when you will return

Be a source of perseverance and forgive the harm
For you will soon see and hear what you worked

In Gaza, children,
you learn that the sky kills
and that houses hurt.
You learn that your blanket is smoke
and breakfast is dirt.

You learn that cars do somersaults
clothes turn red,
friends become statues,
bakers don’t sell bread.

You learn that the night is a gun,
that toys burn
breath can stop,
it could be your turn.

You learn:
if they send you fire
they couldn’t guess:
not just the soldier dies –
it’s you and the rest.

Nowhere to run,
nowhere to go,
nowhere to hide
in the home you know.

You learn that death isn’t life,
the air isn’t bread.

The land is for all – you have the right to be
not dead.
The land is for all – you have the right to be
not dead.
The land is for all – you have the right to be
not dead.
The land is for all -you have the right to be
not dead.

– Michael Rosen

…Love of Allah…
[From Ibn Qayyim’s Qasida Nooniyya]

The love of the Beloved

must be unconditionally returned.
If you claim love
yet oppose the Beloved,
then your love is but a pretense.
You love the enemies of your Beloved
and still seek love in return.

You fight the beloved of your Beloved.
Is this Love or the following of shaytaan?
True devotion is nothing
but total submission
of body and soul
to One Love.

We have seen humans claim to submit,
yet their loyalties are many.

They put their trust here, and their hope there,
and their love is without consequence.
