Do not become so overwhelmed by your wrong action,
that it stops you thinking well of Allah.
Whoever has gnosis of his Lord,
finds that his wrong action is insignificant beside His generosity

And vie with one another to attain to your Sustainer’s forgiveness and to a paradise as vast as the heavens and the earth, which has been readied for the God-conscious

who spend [in His way] in time of plenty and in time of hardship, and hold in check their anger, and pardon their fellow-men because God loves the doers of good;

and who, when they have committed a shameful deed or have [otherwise] sinned against themselves, remember God and pray that their sins be forgiven – for who but God could forgive sins? – and do not knowingly persist in doing whatever they may have done.

These it is who shall have as their reward forgiveness from their Sustainer, and gardens through which running waters flow, therein to abide: and how excellent a reward for those who labour!

So that we may repent

“Allah will continue to hold out His Hand at night so that he who has sinned during the day may repent, and to hold out His Hand during the day so that he who has sinned at night may repent, till the sun rises from the west.”

We can only repent

It is reported that Talq b. Habîb – Allâh have mercy on him – said,

“The right of Allâh is too great and heavy for the creation to fulfill and the blessings of Allâh are too many to enumerate, but you should remain repentant, morning and evening.”

“Allah the Most High says: ‘O son of Adam! As long as you supplicate to Me and hope in Me, I will forgive you what you have done. O son of Adam! If your sins were to reach the lofty regions of the sky, then you ask Me for forgiveness, I would forgive you. O son of Adam! If you were to come to Me with enough sins to fill the earth, but you met Me not associating anything with Me I would bring you the like of it of forgiveness.”

[Sahih al-Bukhari, vol: 8, no: 319]
