The divine decree related to the believer is always a bounty, even if it is in the form of withholding (something that is desired), and it is a blessing, even if it appears to be a trial, and an affliction that has befallen him is in reality a cure, even though it appears to be a disease!

Unfortunately, due to the ignorance of the worshipper, and his transgressions, he does not consider anything to be a gift or a blessing or a cure unless he can enjoy it immediately, and it is in accordance with his nature. If he were only given a little bit of understanding, then he would have counted being withheld from as a blessing, and the sickness as a mercy, and he would relish the trouble that befalls him more than he relishes his ease, and he would enjoy poverty more than he enjoys richness, and he would be more thankful when he is blessed with little than when he is blessed with a lot.

Imam ibn al Qayyim rahimahullah :

Madarij al-Salikin 2/215-216

Abu Idris Al-Khaulani (May Allah had mercy upon him) reported:

I once entered the mosque in Damascus. I happened to catch sight of a young man who had bright teeth (i.e., he was always seen smiling). A number of people had gathered around him. When they differed over anything they would refer it to him and act upon his advice. I asked who he was and I was told that he was Mu`adh bin Jabal (May Allah be pleased with him) The next day I hastened to the mosque, but found that he had arrived before me and was busy in performing Salat. I waited until he finished, and then went to him from the front, greeted him with Salam and said to him, “By Allah I love you.” He asked, “For the sake of Allah?” I replied, “Yes, for the sake of Allah”. He again asked me, “Is it for Allah’s sake?” I replied, “Yes, it is for Allah’s sake.” Then he took hold of my cloak, drew me to himself and said, “Rejoice,! I heard Messenger of Allah (PBUH) saying, `Allah, the Exalted, says: My love is due to those who love one another for My sake, meet one another for My sake, visit one another for My sake and spend in charity for My sake”.

[Malik].

On the authority of Sahl bin Saad Al-Saedi, who said :

A man came to the prophet and said:

“O Messenger of Allah, direct me to an act which, if I do it, [will cause] Allah to love me and people to love me.”

He said:

“Renounce the world and Allah will love you, and renounce what people possess and people will love you.”

It is reported that Prophet Dawud, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

“O Allah, You know that I love You and I love all those who love You, but how may I endear You to Your servants?

Allah said: Remind them of My Favors, My trials and My anger. O Dawud, any of My servants who helped an oppressed person and stood by him in his oppressed state, I’ll keep his feet firm on the Day when all feet will be shaken.”

(Reported by Al-Bayhaqi, Al-Ahadith Al-Qudsiyyah)

Contentment

Narrated to us Qādim ad-Daylamī Al-’Ābid who said, “I said to al-Fuḍayl bin ‘Iyāḍ, ‘Who is content with Allāh (i.e. with what He has given him)?’ He said, ‘The one who does not like to be on a status other than what he is in.’”

[Ar-Riḍā’ 'Anillāh Biqaḍā’ih by al-Imām Ibn Abīd-Dunyā 1/36]

On the authority of Mālik bin Dinār, Al-Ḥasan said, “Whoever is content with Allāh upon a little provision, Allāh will be pleased with his little actions.”

[Ar-Riḍā’ 'Anillāh Biqaḍā’ih by al-Imām Ibn Abīd-Dunyā 1/50]

Tyranny

On the Day of Judgement, the tyrant’s own tyranny will descend upon him in the form of darkness.

Hadith of al-Bukhari and Muslim on the authority of ‘Abdullah Ibn ‘Umar

Three things are part of the good morals of a believer.

When he is overcome by anger, his anger should not drive him to falsehood.

When he is happy, his happiness should not take him beyond the bounds of what is right.

When he has power, he should not stake a claim to something which is not his.

Hadith of at-Tabarani on the authority of Anas Ibn Malik

Narrated to us Abdullāh bin Muḥammad bin Ja’far who said, “Narrated to us ‘Alī bin Isḥāq who said, ‘Narrated to us Ḥusayn al-Marwazī who said, “Narrated to us al-Haytham bin Jamīl who said, ‘Narrated to us Ṣāliḥ al-Murrī on the authority of Abān from Wahb who said,

“I read it in a wise saying,

‘There are four pillars for disbelief: a pillar of it is anger, a pillar of it is desire , a pillar of it is greed and a pillar of it is fear.’”
