Moderate love and hate

The Messenger of Allah said:

أَحْبِبْ حَبِيبَكَ هَوْناً مَا

Love your loved ones moderately,

عَسَى اَنْ يَكُونَ بَغِيضَكَ يوماً مَا

as one day he may become someone you hate!

وَ اَبْغِضْ بَغِيضَكَ هَوْناً مَا

And hate the one you hate moderately,

عَسَى أَنْ يَكُونَ حَبِيبَكَ يَوماً مَا

as one day he may become someone you love!

It is saheeh as Shaykh ‘Alee al-Halabee shows in “Forty Hadeeth on the Islamic Personality” (#3).

Double Calamity

Some of the Salaf رحمهم الله said

“If you are afflicted by a calamity and you are a patient, then your calamity is one. But if you are not patient, then your calamity is doubled – losing the reward and losing the beloved one, the Hereafter (Paradise).”

This saying of some of the Salaf is in relation to what Allaah سبحانه وتعالى mentions in Surah al-Hajj, verse 11:

وَمِنَ النَّاسِ مَن يَعْبُدُ اللَّهَ عَلَى حَرْفٍ فَإِنْ أَصَابَهُ خَيْرٌ اطْمَأَنَّ بِهِ وَإِنْ أَصَابَتْهُ فِتْنَةٌ انقَلَبَ عَلَى وَجْهِهِ خَسِرَ الدُّنْيَا وَالْآخِرَةَ ذَلِكَ هُوَ الْخُسْرَانُ الْمُبِينُ

{And among mankind is he who worships Allaah as it were upon the edge (i.e. in doubt): if good befalls him, he is content therewith; but if a trial befalls him he turns back on his face (i.e. reverts to disbelief after embracing Islaam). He loses both this world and the Hereafter. That is the evident loss.} [Al-Hajj 22:11]

Four Traits

Imam Ghazali mentions in his Ihya’ that Imam Junaid said,

“Four traits lift a person to the highest ranks, even if their works and knowledge are little:

(1) Forbearance (hilm)

(2) Humility (tawadu`)

(3) Generosity (sakha’)

(4) Good character (husn al-khuluq)–and this is the perfection of faith.”

You Have A Huge Wealth Of Blessings

My sister, verily with every difficulty there is ease (Qur’an 94:6); after night comes the day. The clouds of worry will be blown away, the darkness of distress will be dispelled, and calamities will come to an end, by Allâh’s leave. Remember that you will be rewarded, and if you are a mother, your children will be a great support and help for Islâm, if you bring them up properly. They will make du’â’ for you when they prostrate and at the end of the night, just before dawn. It is a great blessing if you are a compassionate and kind mother. It is sufficient honour and pride for you to remember that the mother of Muhammad (Blessings and Peace be upon him) gave mankind a great leader, the noble Messenger.

You have the potential to be a dâ’iyah (caller to Islâm) calling other women to the path of Allâh with kind words, good exhortation and wisdom, arguing in a manner that is better, debating and guiding others by means of your good behaviour and setting an example. A woman may achieve, by means of her conduct and righteous deeds, things that cannot be achieved by Khutbahs (religious sermons), lectures and lessons. How often has a woman gone to live in a neighbourhood, and people started to talk about her religious commitment, modesty, hijâb (Islâmic dress) and good attitude, her kindness to her neighbours and her obedience to her husband, so she became a good example to others – that was spoken by all.

A weapon is only as good as the person who is using it.

Imaam Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:

“duas and ta’awwudhaat [prayers seeking refuge with Allaah] are like a weapon, and a weapon is only as good as the person who is using it; it is not merely the matter of how sharp it is. If the weapon is perfect and free of faults, and the arm of the person using it is strong, and there is nothing stopping him, then he can lay waste the enemy. But if any of these three features is lacking, then the effect will be lacking accordingly.”
(al-Daa’ wa’l-Dawaa’, p. 35).
